"Edwall.—Funeral for Vern Anderson, 90, of Edwall, took place Monday, Jan 15, at the Edwall United Methodist Church with Pastor Carolyn Krupke officiating. Concluding service and vault interment followed at the Edwall Cemetery.
Mr. Anderson died Jan 9 in Spokane. His own ‘unexciting account of my time here on earth', written in March 1989, was read at the service. He was born Nov 8, 1916, the youngest of six sisters and an older brother. He attended Summit No. 88 School, located about 1 ½ miles north of Waukon, and transferred to Edwall School in 1926.
He also attended Washington State College, which he left in 1936 to become a rural mail carrier at Waukon. His postal career was interrupted when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a ‘replacement' for school buddy Fred Wollenberg who had enlisted in the Navy Air Corps and was missing, and presumed dead in 1942 during World War II.
Mr. Anderson received pilot wings and the rank of 1st Lieutenant on Oct 1, 1943. He served as an instructor for the remainder of the war and was in the Reserve until his 1966 retirement as a Major. Returning home, he worked as a mail carrier from December 1945 until his retirement in 1977, '41 years and one day with the Post Office Department.' He also farmed a small farm— ‘I didn't make much money but gained an enormous amount of exercise'—that was 750 acres when he quit.
He married the former Sarah (Sally) June Nixon on Feb 13, 1938. She died in 2000. During their marriage, they visited 42 countries and 49 states. He belonged to the Edwall United Methodist Church , Reardan Masonic Lodge No. 146 F & AM, OES No. 159 in Davenport , Edwall Lions Club, Lincoln County Historical Society, Reserve Officers Association, Retired Rural Mail Carriers and Waukon Grange No. 894.
He also was a retired volunteer firefighter, serving for more than 35 years. His involvements also included the National Association of Rural Carriers, state Grange, Masonic Lodge (a past master), Senior Citizens, Lions Club, eight years on the Edwall School Board, Edwall Water Association, Centennial Committee and Edwall Grain Growers.
Besides his wife, a brother and six sisters preceded him in death. He leaves three children, Carol Paul of Edwall, Stewart (Andy) Anderson of East Wenatchee and Arlene Anderson of Spokane ; four grandchildren, Patrick and Karrie Paul and Justin and Chelsea Anderson; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport handled arrangements." (Davenport Times: 1-18-2007
