Mary Ellen was the daughter of William Morris Story and Elizabeth "Eliza" C. Phares, natives of Ohio. Mary was born in Illinois, probably in De Witt County, where her parents were married in 1851.
Mary Ellen's mother was a granddaughter of Joseph C. Laird and Eleanor "Ellen" (Morison) Laird, natives of Scotland who emigrated to the United States in about 1817 after a brief stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was also a descendant of the Phares family of New Jersey that had been in the United States since early colonial times.
Mary Ellen's father was the son of Palmer Story and Mary Ann (Morris) Story, both of whom died in the late 1880s in Blomington, Illinois.
Mary Ellen married Richard Baxter Bovee on March 27, 1877 in De Witt County, Illinois. I was unable to find them in the 1880 census, but in the 1900 census they are living in Washington Township in Jasper County, Iowa. Five years later, on Jun 1, 1905, they are in Grantsburg, Burnett County, Washington. Thereafter, they are living in Cloverland Twp., Asotin County, Washington State.
Richard Bovee died between 1920 and 1930. Mary Ellen soon followed him in 1931.
During their life together, Mary Ellen gave birth to at least 6 children, 4 of whom died prior to 1900. Their daughter, Nellie M. (Bovee) Thompson, born in 1881, died in 1936 in Asotin Twp., Asotin County, Washington, just a few years after her mother.
Descendants of Richard and Mary Ellen Bovee are numerous and populate mostly the Western states.
