Russell J. Fowler Jr., 93, known as Jack to family and friends, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at his home in Cloverland after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 7, 1919, to Russell and Edna Fowler, in Cleveland. He attended high school in North Olmsted, Ohio, where he met his wife, Evelyn (June) Fowler, and they were married in November of 1947.
Their two sons are Kim R. Fowler, of Minerva, Ohio, and Pastor Fred R. Fowler Sr. of Cloverland. Kim, 64, is a Vietnam vet and a retired employee of the State of Ohio Transportation Department. Fred, 59, is pastor of the Pioneer Baptist Church in Cloverland and is owner of Valley Hardwood.
Russell was in the Army during World War II, an auto mechanic, and was wounded while on duty. His group was active during the chase of German Gen. Rommel across North Africa. Among his medals were the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Bronze Star and World War II Victory Ribbon.
After the war, he worked with his father in a trucking/asphalt-drive business. In 1959, the family moved to Jefferson, Ohio, and Jack purchased the Gulf Oil Station, known as Jack's Gulf, operating it for a few years before taking a job as tractor-driver with the Operators Union, Local 18, Cleveland, Ohio, for several years. He then worked for the State of Ohio Department of Transportation for 22 years before retiring in 1982. He had been a hard worker all his life, and a loyal family man.
In the 1960s, he was a Cub Scout leader in Claridon, Ohio. He and June moved to Cloverland in July of 2003. He attended the Pioneer Baptist Church when his health was better. Among his interests were listening to polka music, going to Oktoberfests, car races, watching sports on TV and working on cars.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years; his two sons; their wives, Wilma and Cheryl; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren (one more on the way).
Survivors also include his sister, Willadean Miller. A sister, Betty Kuta, preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Pioneer Baptist Church, 18750 Cloverland Road, Asotin. Pastor Fowler officiating. Burial will be at the Lake Cemetery in Cloverland, following the services.
Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
