Stephen was the son of Sarah Smith and William Silvers. He was married to Nancy Neely and Mary Ann VanHook. Three of his children were born prior to his marriage to Nancy Neely. Jesse Martin Silver's death certificate gives his mother as Amanda Neely, who was likely not the same person as Nancy. None of Stephen's records have a middle name or middle initial for him.

Stephen served the Union in Company F, 12th Kentucky Infantry and in Company I, 49th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War.

Stephen's year of birth listed above, 1823, is from information written on the back of the photo provided by Thomas Clark, which he found in an antique mall in Michigan. This photo had on the back: Born 1823; Died 1889; Stephen Silvers; Father Wesley Silvers, which evidently means father of Wesley Silvers.

Stephen was married on 2 May 1849 in Pulaski County, KY, to Nancy Neely. Nancy was a daughter of Robert H. and Charity Lewis Neely, who were also parents of Elzira Neely, the wife of Michael Silvers, Stephen's brother. Nancy died on 22 Sep 1852. Where she is buried is unknown at this time. One online family tree indicated that her burial was at Haynes Cemetery, where Rutha Caroline Silvers Haynes was buried, but this is not proven.

On 18 Aug 1853 Stephen married Mary Ann "Polly" VanHook, who was the daughter of Aaron and Sarah "Sally" Humphreys VanHook. Family trees on ancestry.com indicate her date of death was 19 Mar 1901; this date has not yet been verified by this writer by means of historical records.

Jesse Martin Silvers

Stephen and Nancy's child:
William Thomas "Tom" Silvers - Thomas was one of five Silvers grandchildren shown with the Robert H Neelys on the 1860 US Census. They were children of Nancy/Stephen and Elzira/Michael. Although Thomas's parents are not shown on the historical records, it is evident that he was the son of Stephen and Nancy; Michael and Elzira had a son in 1867 they named George Thomas, who also went by the name Thomas. William Thomas is buried in the Rush Branch Cemetery.

Application was made for a headstone from the federal War Department by Stephen's son, J.H. (John Henry) Silvers of Mt. Victory, Kentucky, in October, 1930. The headstone was shipped in December, 1930, to be placed on Stephen's unmarked grave in the VanHook Cemetery; it is evident that this cemetery was known in 1930 as the VanHook Cemetery. After his marriage to Mary Ann, Stephen bought land that Aaron VanHook had left to his children. A 5 Feb 1869 deed gives the details of these land purchases he made.

There are only two "readable" headstones in this cemetery. There is a photo of the cemetery on the facebook page for the Pulaski County Cemetery Board which shows these two headstones: https://www.facebook.com/229896367021169/photos/a.515334078477395.124274.229896367021169/515334308477372/?type=3&theater. One of them was hand made, and the name "Mary" is fairly plain. The other is for Stephen Silvers; it was professionally done and provided by the US War Department.
