George Walters Bickett, 59, of Vine Grove, KY, passed away on Tuesday July 18, 2006 at his home. He grew up on a 300-acre dairy farm that his father, Pat Bickett, inherited from his grandfather, George Thomas Bickett. George attended St. Brigid's Catholic Church and the Catholic school through the eighth grade and then Vine Grove High School thereafter until losing interest in the public school. George had planned to take over the family farm but was later drafted to serve in the U.S. Army as a tank commander. After two years stationed in Germany, he went to Fort Lewis, WA via Fort Dix, NJ, awaiting orders to go directly to Vietnam. However, he received news that his father died. After two weeks of authorized leave he returned only find out that his maternal grandfather had also died. After an unauthorized (AWOL) return flight from Ft. Lewis to Ft. Knox, George returned to Ft. Lewis, WA having to prove and ultimately justify his actions. These particular events however left Mr. Bickett with only five and a half months left on his draft time and six months was required to go to Vietnam. Upon returning home, he found that the family farm was no longer as well as it had been sold.
George was a car enthusiast. Upon returning he purchased a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air which he kept the rest of his life. Mr. Bickett eventually married Brenda on August 19, 1977 at Freeman's Lake in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co, KY. Shortly after he began civil service employment at Fort Knox (where he also attended basic training previously) but had to medically retire due to health reasons after a twenty-seven year career.
George had the gift of gab and was always ready with a good story or a joke to get you laughing. He never met a stranger but could always make a friend. He never desired to live anywhere other than Vine Grove near his friends and family. It was his home.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents Patrick Bickett and Mabel Miller, one of his brothers Jimmy Bickett, and two of his sisters Jonell Crigler and Laura Bickett. He is survived by his wife Brenda Bickett and his son, Travis Bickett, both of Vine Grove, KY, his brothers Tom Bickett of St. Petersburg, FL, Edwin Eugene "Bub" Bickett of Richmond, KY, as well as three sisters Patsy (Bickett) McMahan of Flaherty, KY, Martean (Bickett) Mikkola of Walled Lake, MI, and Carolyn DeGraw of Kenneth, MO.
