Martha Joyce Byerly Benton of Vine Grove was admitted to ICU on Nov. 19, her 80th birthday and passed away on Thanksgiving Day 2012 after a battle with pneumonia.
She was a long-time member of St. Brigid's Catholic Church. Joyce graduated from Vine Grove High School in the Class of 1950 and retired from the Civilian Personnel Office at Fort Knox.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Benton; her parents, Martin G. Byerly and Nancy Edith Byerly; and three sisters, Gladys Byerly Clark (Charles), Alma Jean Byerly Sheeran (Paul) and Nellie Catherine Byerly Johnson (Elroy).
Joyce was the loving mother of three children, Cynthia Gail Benton Smith (Brig. Gen. Joseph A. Smith, retired), Paul Bruce Benton and Brian James Benton (Diane Hall). She had eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She also is survived by two brothers, Tommy Byerly (Joyce) of Vine Grove and Joe Byerly (Dottie) of Savannah, Ga. "She will be greatly missed by family and friends but safe in the hands of the Lord."
A Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Vine Grove with Rev. Daniel L. Lincoln officiating. Burial follows in St. Brigid Cemetery in Vine Grove.
Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Neslon-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Vine Grove where there is a prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday.
Memorial contributions should be directed to the American Heart Association.
