Hoyt Darin Abbott
(October 17, 1933 - September 22, 2012)
Hoyt Darin Abbott, son of the Leo and Eva Criswell Abbott, was born in the Burfield community of Wayne County on October 17, 1933. He departed this life on September 22, 2012, reaching the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 5 days.
At an early age he professed faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Steubenville Baptist Church. At the time of his passing he was a member of the First Baptist Church. He talked about his Lord and taught his family to place their trust in Him in times of trouble.
At age sixteen, Hoyt left home and found work in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later in Muncie, Indiana. After returning to Wayne County, on September 29, 1952, he married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Baker. To this union two children survive: Patty Abbott and Connie Parnell (husband, Kenneth), both of Monticello, Kentucky. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kendal Parnell (wife, Tonya), Seth Parmley, Wendy Denney (husband, Seth), and Leah Bertram (husband, Shane), all of Monticello, Kentucky. He is also survived by six great-granddaughters, Taylor and Lacy Parnell, Hailey and Kenzie Bertram, Lylah and Madelyn Denney. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn and Max Abbott; and one sister, Mary Freda Abbott. He is survived by one brother, Bill Abbott, of Kingman, Arizona. He also leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.
Hoyt worked at many different jobs throughout his life. He farmed, worked at sawmills, worked in oil fields, worked in factories, served as Monticello police chief, and most recently as assistant animal control officer for Wayne County. He had an excellent work ethic and worked as long as his health permitted.
Hoyt was also ordained as a Baptist minister in June 1978, and pastored churches in Wayne County. He served as pastor of Green Hill Baptist for almost eleven years. He had a true pastor's heart and was always concerned or worried about people.
Although we will miss him, we know that Hoyt is in a far better place. As a pastor, he often quoted Hebrew 4:9 which says, "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God." We trust that he has now entered into that rest."
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 5 – 9 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 2 pm at the Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home with Bro. Seth Denney, Bro. Kendall Parnell, and Bro. Dennis Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in Elk Spring Cemetery.
