Ella M. Bonner, 89, passed Friday, March 16, 2012 at River Hills West Health Care Center, Pewaukee, Wis.

Ella lived nearly all of her life in Shrewsbury. The daughter of William and Rosa Lee Bonner, she was born in New Freedom on October 20, 1922.

A viewing will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral service, and celebration of her life, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul U.C.C., 161 S. Main St, Shrewsbury.

Immediately following interment at Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery, a visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall. In honor of her special talent, pie will be served.

Upon completing 8th grade, Ella worked as seamstress for the former W.C. Anstine & Son, Railroad, where she also served as shop chairwomen for the ILGWU. Near retirement, her employers were South Pine Nightwear and Danskin in York. Ella's life was devoted to family and the care of others. Besides being a committed volunteer for the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, she was a devoted member of St. Paul U.C.C. She served her church as an officer of the Sunday School and deaconess. She was well-known for helping to manage church bake sales and community pie tables. She donated apple butter and pies often made with fruit grown in her own backyard. Introduced to quilting by her mother as a very young child, many people treasure the quilts she donated to charity and gave as gifts.

Ella is survived by her daughter, Pat Bonner and son-in-law, Douglas Briggs of Waukesha, Wis. with whom she resided in her final years. Ella has a granddaughter and two granddaughters living in Wylie, Texas. She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Bonner; a sister, Jennie Myers; and niece, Rosalee (Bonner) Griffin.

Ella was the beloved nanny of Brian, Nathan and Caitlin Markline who are the children of Joy (Bowman) and Gary Markline of Glen Rock.
