Gilbert F. Calhoun, 88, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Rest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, York. He was the husband of the late Mary Gertrude (Eckenrode) Calhoun. There will be a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, at Shrewsbury Baptist Church 612 W. Clearview Drive, Shrewsbury. The service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Otto Mazzoni officiating. Burial will be in Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery, Shrewsbury, with military rites by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born January 3, 1925, in Glen Rock, he was the son of the late Foy H. and Maggie B. (Snider) Calhoun. Gilbert had been a very active member of Shrewsbury Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Venango in the South Pacific. Gilbert was a life long farmer in the Shrewsbury area. Surviving are two sisters, Cathern M. Boyer and Helen E. Schlaline, both of York; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins living in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Australia. He was predeceased by a sister, Mae M. Fry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shrewsbury Baptist Church, General Fund, P.O. Box 184, Shrewsbury, PA 17361. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, is in charge of arrangements.
