Passing of Mrs. Emma Arthur, Mayhill Pioneer

Mayhill--The community of Mayhill was saddened Thursday, July 10, by the passing of Mrs. Emma Arthur, one of it's oldest and most loved pioneer citizens. Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm., Friday, July 11, at the Baptist Church, of which she had been a member since her early years. Rev. A. Swearengen, Minister of the Baptist Church conducted the services. Interment was made in the James Canyon Cemetery.

Mrs. Arthur, better known to her friends and neighbors as "Grannie" was born in the year 1860 on May 7th in Bee County, Texas. At Stephenville, Texas, on October 12, 1873, she became the wife of Charles A. Arthur. To this union was born nine children, two of whom died in infancy. They and their three children Romer, Cora, and a baby boy, left their Texas home on May 1st, 1884 and began their journey to this country. They reached a spot a few miles below Mayhill on August 12, 1884, where they lived for a few months, after which they settled on a place about two miles above Mayhill where they made their home the remainder of their lives.
Their baby boy died during their trip. After coming here they were blessed as the years went by with five more children.

Mr Arthur died on April 11, 1899, leaving Mrs. Arthur with seven children and the farm to look after. With much courage and a strong will she met her trials and heartaches, performing her many tasks well, however hard they seemed Always she smiled and bore her burdens in silence. She will always be remembered by all who knew her for her cheerfulness and sweet smiles. Even in her last hours of suffering she found the courage to smile to those who waited on her.

She is survived by one son, Romer Arthur of Cottonwood, Arizona and five daughters: Mrs Cora Wells of Kingman, Arizona, Mrs. Carrie Posey, Mrs. Lillie Barkley, Mrs. Cressie Dockray all of Mayhill, and Mrs. Eula McNatt of Tularosa. Another son Dink Arthur preceeded his mother in death on January 18, 1930. Besides these there are 19 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Also one sister, Mrs. Babe Keith of Dublin, Texas and one sister-in-law, Mrs. J. E. Arthur of Dickens, Texas.
