L.R. Boyd, 83, of Niota, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at his residence.
A native and longtime resident of McMinn County, and a former resident of Bakersfield, Calif., and Dalton, Ga., he was a son of the late Reed and Gertrude Kinser Boyd. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Glaphery Ray Richeson Boyd, on Dec. 13, 1992; one daughter, Dr. Diana Eades, on March 11, 2003; and one brother, Garland Boyd.
He was a former resident of Bakersfield, Calif., where he was a detective for the railroad, and moved to Dalton, Ga., where he owned a car lot. He owned and operated a service station, Boyd Trucking, Park View Restaurant and Boyd Purse Company in McMinn County, and had been a flying instructor for Garrison Flight of Cleveland. He was a member and singer at Old Pond Hill Baptist Church. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and was a farmer and avid bird hunter.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Baker Montgomery Boyd of Niota; one granddaughter, Taylor Eades of Ooltewah; one son-in-law and his wife, Jerry and Michelle Eades of Ooltewah; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Tena and Robert Riden of Niota, and Teresa and Jeff Thompson of Athens; and three step-grandchildren and one spouse, Allen and Crystal Riden, Julie Riden and Taylor Montgomery Thompson.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. D.C. Kirk officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Pond Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Simpson, Jim Sherman, Robert Riden, J.W. McPhail, Allen Riden and Jeff Thompson.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
