|Death: ||Oct. 25, 1887|
Anna Swain was born in 1840 in Bristol, Pennsylvania, to Rachel Stackhouse Swain and William Swain. Both parents are in Find-A-Grave. William (1817-1883) is buried in Riverside Cemetery, in Cambridge City, Indiana. Rachel (1815-1866) is buried in Lost Creek (Lostcreek), Cemetery in Ohio.
Anna's brother, Wilmon (1840-1884) is buried in New Orleans. Anna's sister Sarah (Sallie) Stevison is likely buried in California where she lived with her daughter, Helen Stevison French.
Anna married Charles Grandesson Adams March 18, 1866, in Miami County, Ohio. Little can be found about her husband. Anna graduated from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1873. She spent 1874 at the Electropathic Institute of Ohio before relocating to Peoria, Illinois, 1875. In 1875 Anna became the first female member of the Peoria City Medical Society which had been organized in 1848. She was also the Society's first female officer and a delegate to both state and national medical society meetings.
Sometime between February, 1866, and her death she moved to Macclenny. Her will revealed the surprising existence of an adopted son, Gerald Swain, who apparently was still a minor when Anna died. Gerald is still pretty much a mystery to me.
