Robert Joaquin Alsina, passed away on September 13, 2013. He predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Rita Garmendia Alsina. He is survived by three sons: Robert, Jr. (Patty); Raul (Bobbi) of St. Petersburg; Joseph (Julia) of the US Virgin Islands; one daughter, Ofelia (John Sivyer) of Tallahassee; six grandchildren: Robert Alsina, III, of St. Petersburg; Kimberly Alsina (Brian Karney) of Ft. Lauderdale; Steve Sivyer (Brittany) of St. Augustine; Katie Green (David) of Franklin, Tennessee; Ashley Appugliese (Mike) of St. Petersburg; and Angie Alsina of St. Petersburg; and five great-grandsons, Gabe Sivyer, Ezra Sivyer, Titus Sivyer, Jonah Sivyer, and Mikey Appugliese; and also a niece, Elena Leiseca Perez (Demetrio) of Williamsburg, VA.
He was born in Havana, Cuba on December 5, 1920. He is an alumnus of Belen Jesuit School, Havana, and Florida Military Academy, St. Petersburg. He was employed by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company for many years, and was the company's buyer for the entire Caribbean. He came to the United States in June 1961 and settled in St. Petersburg, where he served on Mayor Goldberg's Committee to aid incoming Cuban refugees. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Cuban Refugee Association, and served as liaison-interpreter of Mr. Wesley Jenkins Family Services Board.
He retired from Allstate Insurance Company where he worked as a multi-line adjuster/translator for many years. After retirement, he taught conversational Spanish at the city library and Azalea Center, and was an active member of St. Jude the Apostle Cathedral where he served as an usher.
Viewing will be at Brett Funeral Home from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Tuesday, September 17, followed by a funeral mass at St. Jude's Chapel at 1:00 PM. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens.
