Death: May 3, 2008

IRENE AGNES ASENJO BARNETTE, age 88, recently of Gainesville, FL, was called home to God very peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Jesus the Good Shepherd walked her home.

She was born in West Palm Beach, FL, of Victor and Agnes Asenjo on February 14, 1920. A graduate of St. Anne Catholic School, she went to Georgetown School of Nursing and graduated in 1942. Marriage to James B. Barnette, a career Naval officer, gave the joys of being a wife and mother, in addition to living in many parts of the USA, in Panama and the territory of Hawaii.

Returning to nursing after 25 years, she worked at St. Mary's Hospital and the Palm Beach County Home. She enjoyed her years of retirement, spending time with family and friends and traveling (especially to the mountains), yet always missed being a nurse. Irene enjoyed being with people, sewing, baking, cooking, playing cards, a lover of pro-baseball, and watching Gator football. She volunteered in many church activities over the years, especially helping people, and was a volunteer with LifeLine. She was a good listener, and always ready to help people. She had a great sense of humor and loved to have fun.

She loved her Catholic faith and was a faithful daughter of God, a loving mother, and a loyal friend.

Irene is survived by two daughters: Bernardine A. Stento of Staunton, VA, and Sister Patricia M. Barnette, RGS, of Gainesville, FL; grandson Stephen Stento of Anthem, AZ, his wife Jamie and great grandsons Jake and Ryan; granddaughter Julie Palmer of Va. Beach, VA, great grandson James, great granddaughter Bethany, and great-great granddaughter Isabel.
