George Reginald Bodmer, Jr., devoted husband and father passed away on Saturday, October 14, at the age of 78. Born March 1,1928 to George, Sr. and Helen Bodmer at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.
George spent his early life on or near the water. An avid swimmer, George spent untold hours of his childhood occupied on the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. In 1945, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on numerous fleet commands, the grandest of which he felt was his tour of duty aborad the USS Missouri (BB-63). He left active service in the Navy in 1949 only to be recalled to duty in December 1950 shortly after the start of the Korean War. A recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and Victory Medal, he left the Navy with an Honorable Discharge in 1952.
In 1957, George married Virginia McDonald Newberry, and together they raised six children.
A restauranteur, real estate broker, ardent Washington Redskins supporter and fervent Florida Gators fan, George finally retired with his wife to Boynton Beach, FL in 1990 where he was surrounded by family and friends in the place he called "Paradise."
George R. Bodmer, Jr. is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia; his six children, Joseph Bodmer of Falls Church, VA, Peter Bodmer of Cape Coral, Peg Bodmer Delp of Boynton Beach, Matthew Bodmer of Jacksonville, Sandra Bodmer Almond of Wellington and Christopher Bodmer of Tampa, his sister Joan Daniels of Port Charlotte, two nephews, Mike and Lee Daniels of Rockville, MD and fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to be received at the wake from 7:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, October 18,2006. Funeral Services will be Thursday, October 19,2006 at 11AM at the Palm Beach Memorial Park, 3691 Seacrest Boulevard, Lantana, FL 33462.
Flowers are welcome and donations to Hospice of Palm Beach County, Inc, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 are most welcome and encouraged.
