James Liston Brown, 91, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Brown was born on Friday, March 18, 1920, in Conway, SC, to J. Eddie Brown and Melanie ("Mellie") Beverly Brown.

He graduated from Clemson University with a BS degree in agronomy. He joined the Army Air Corps and served as a pilot during WWII in the European Theatre.

He married Mable Barnes Brown of Georgetown, SC. They were married for 62 years until her death in April of 2008.

Jim worked for Coker Pedigree Seed Company as an agronomist working on the scientific breeding of hardier, more disease-resistant plants to improve greater yields for farmers. He retired in the 1980's. In retirement he found great pleasure in gardening, fishing, ballroom dancing with Mable, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid fan and supporter of all Clemson sports. Spending time with his grandchildren, watching and attending Atlanta Braves games, and tending a garden were favorite pastimes. He was a patient and caring man whose steady, quiet guidance will be missed. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Lydia, SC.

His son, James Robert Brown, of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Deborah Brown of Cumming, GA; granddaughter, Dorian Alyson Brown of Newnan, GA; son-in-law, Charles "Beau" Smith and grandson, Julian Smith, of Smyrna, GA; and special family friend and caregiver, Betty Carter, survive him.

His spouse, Mable, and daughter, Dr. Carolyn Anne Brown Smith, preceded Jim in death.

Graveside services will be at two o'clock on Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2012, at Union United Methodist Cemetery in Georgetown. Officiating will be the Rev. Andrea Davis.

The family will receive visitations and offer a memorial celebration for the life of James L. Brown on Thursday afternoon, March 15, 2012, at Black Creek Arts Center, 116 W. College Ave. in Hartsville, SC from three until five o'clock.
