Peter R. Allan, 81, Bismarck, died July 29, 2002, in a Bismarck hospital following a brief illness after surgery earlier in the month. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Chaplain Burnie Kunz officiating. Burial will be at noon Wednesday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

A special receiving of friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Pete was born April 14, 1921, the son of Fred and Mamie (Shier) Allan of Tuttle. He graduated from Tuttle High School in 1939 and attended Wahpeton School of Science, studying journalism. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and served in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. He was a master sergeant with the Signal Corps and served as a cryptographer.

Pete married Jeanne Johnson in 1948, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. Jeanne passed away in 2001.

Pete was a longtime, avid golfer and was still shooting his age, playing up until the time of his surgery two weeks ago. He won many tournaments including the Apple Creek Club Championship in 1971 and the North Dakota Super Senior Tournament in 1989.

He was an avid sports fan, enjoying the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and especially NCAA basketball. In his younger days he played softball, and legend has it that he played a fast-pitch game shortly after his own wedding service. He also enjoyed hunting and bowling.

Pete worked for Provident Life Insurance Company until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Apple Creek Country Club and Bismarck Elks Lodge.

Pete is survived by one daughter, Nancy Alfton, her husband, Dennis, and his greatest love, his granddaughter, Erica, age 12, Golden Valley, Minn.; one sister, Ms. Lucy Wick, Albuquerque, N.M.; a niece, Jill Shirley Joersz and family; and three nephews, Doug Wick and family, Bismarck, Robert Allan and family, Dickinson, and Tom Allan, Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert Allan and George Allan; and his sisters, Marge Shirley and Jeannie Paulson.
