The son of Hugh Lee Alison and Mary Catherine Beekman, Jacob H. Alison was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Died during the yellow fever outbreak of 1853, Shreveport and Natchitoches Parish in the Grand Ecore and Campti vicinity were especially hard hit.

The Shreveport Democrat, of the 29th, contains a list of 21 deaths in that town from the 18th to the 29th inclusive. In the list we see the names of Benj. Wells, Jr., and Drs. Allison [sic], Samuel Bennett and R. L. Scruggs.

*Article insinuates that the above died from the "dreadful scourge" i.e. yellow fever.

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Jacob H. Alison, a physician was living in the Richard A. Cutliffe home with several other druggists and physicians (spelled Phisician by the census taker), an attorney, a carpenter and a "gentleman". JHA was nineteen years of age at the time of the census.

There was a Dr. Joseph H. Alison in the Louisiana Marriage records marrying Octavine Hill on January 22, 1852 in Caddo Parish.

A *portrait of Dr. Jacob Hyelman Alison painted in the year 1850 is cataloged by the National Society of Colonial Dames, Tennessee, "Portraits Painted Before 1866" 1964 and is listed in the Art Inventories Catalog of Smithsonian American Art Museums. It's description of Dr. Alison:

Born in Charleston, South Carolina and died in Shreveport, Louisiana. Married Octavine Hill, the daughter of William Kenan Hill of Maury County, Tennessee, on Jan. 22, 1852. Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. Practiced in Shreveport, Louisiana.

*Portrait is owned by a restricted owner in Columbia, Tennessee.

*Dr. Alison and Octavine's only child, Mary Catherine Alison married William J. Webster, II on October 23, 1872. Octavine, Mary Catherine and William J. Webster are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia, Tennessee.
