Candelario Contreras was born in Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila, Mexico to Gomecindo and Francisca (de la Cruz) Contreras.
At the age of 13 years, he came to Texas from Mexico and was raised by a German family in Castroville.
He married Magdalena Garza in Castroville, Texas on September 4, 1888.
True story is told that Candelario was threatened by a couple of men. A close friend loaned him a gun for protection. On his way to the general store, the two bad hombres attacked him and in self defense he shot one of them. Didn't kill the bad hombre, just wounded him. This incident landed Candelario in jail in Taylor, but was soon released by the judge. Just a case of self defense and no show of the bad hombres.
