Death: Mar. 12, 2012

Alston Bynum, "I finished my course." On Monday, March 12, 2012, at 9:00 p.m., at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center, a lifetime resident of Brusly, La., Alston Bynum, transcended into that great celestial city to be with his heavenly Father. He was 77 years old,

a retired educator, and a candid community leader. Alston was born October 22. 1934, to the late Vanderbilt Bynum, Sr. and Beatrice Thomas Bynum of Brusly, La.

He accepted Christ and was baptized at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church by the late Rev. Robert Smith.

He was united in matrimony on June 8, 1962, to Albertha Askins Bynum. To this union, two children were born: Vadais Marie and Alston Reginald.

Alston attended Lukeville Elementary and Cohn High School in West Baton Rouge Parish. He attended Southern University, Baton Rouge, and went on to earn a B.S., an M. ed., and a Plus-Thirty.

He was a great humanitarian who loved his country; he joined the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Immediately following his military responsibilities, Alston became employed with the WBR Parish Schools where he served 41 years in many capacities.

He taught at Erwinville and Brusly Middle Schools. He also served as an assistant principal at Brusly High School. After eight years at Brusly High, he became employed at the WBR Parish School Board as a Supervisor. Because he had a passion for teaching, he became an Adult Education instructor in WBR.

Alston was very active in comunity affairs. He also enjoyed singing. He sang in the Mass Choir at his church, where he eventually became President and served in hat capacity for many years. He also served as President of the Christians of Joy Choir in WBR Parish. He served on the WBR Federal Credit Union Committee.

Still having a genuine passion for the field of education, Alston was very instrumental in implementing the first Baccalaureate Program held in WBR. Among the many organizations of which Alston was associated were the Beta Club, the Future Business Leaders of America, and the Distributive Education Clubs of America; the latter is where he was recognized as an Extraordinary Educator for professionalism and leadership. He also held memberships with the WBR Education Association, the Louisiana Education Association, and the National Education Association.
