Death: Feb. 18, 1909

News reached here Monday that Mrs.
Harriet Loomis Austin, widow of the late
Madison Austin, had died at Carthage.
She was well known here and was held
in high esteem. Her funeral will be held
on Thursday. Interment will be made
in Swinburn cemetery. Mrs. Austin
leaves three brothers, William and Otis
Loomis, of Carthage, and Byron Loomis,
of Hannibal, Mo., and one daughter, Mrs
William Silver, of Carthage.

-News reached here last week that
Harriet Nichols Austin, wife of Ed
ward Austin, had died at her home in
Newark, N. Y., on February 18th. Last
fall Mr. Austin with his invalid wife
moved to Newark from Deer River, where
they had resided for 16 years. For many
years Mrs. Austin had been a great sufferer
with that fatal disease, diabetes
For some time before her death she had
become totally blind and so deaf that it
was almost impossible to make her hear.
Mrs. Austin was born near Watertown in
1845 and in 1865 was united in marriage
to Mr. Austin. For several years she
had been a member of the Congregational
church in this place and a member of the
Christian Endeavor society and Ladies
Aid of Deer River. She was greatly re
spected by her many friends and neighbors
in this vicinity, who had known her
for so many years. Her remains arrived
at Deer River Friday evening, accom
panied by her husband, one son and her
sister. Her funeral was held from the
church at 10 A M. Saturday, Rev. J. H.
Keeling officiating. Interment was made
in Swinburn cemetery. She is survived
by her husband; two sons, B. 0. Austin,
of Pinckney; F. M. Austin, of Syracuse;
one sister, Mrs. E. P. Rhodes, and her
mother, Mrs. Harriet Mainard of Rochester,
also one brother, William Nichols,
of Norwich, Conn. The bearers at her
funeral were C. B. Clark, J. C. Wiggins,
H. A. Wilcox and Jason Plopper. 8everal
