Gerald T. Barnes, 72, passed away unexpectedly Oct 26, 2009 at Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, VT. He was born Apr 6, 1937 in Hogansburg, the son of Fred and Louise Cook Barnes. He attended St. Regis Mohawk School, he attended Bombay High School and later received his GED. Gerald served in the US Army from Aug 1955, having served overseas until his discharge in Dec 1958. He served in the US Army Reserves, Massena Detachment from 1978 until 1986. He married Grace E. Gaspe on Sept 2, 1961 at the St. Regis Catholic Church. Gerald was a supervisor for the NY State Depart of Transportation for 33 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he went to work part-time for the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens for 7 years. He was a member of the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department from 1973 until he resigned in 1982 due to ill health. While a member of the department, he once served as both President and Vice President. He was also a member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479, and a former member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, flower gardening, and was an avid reader. He loved to travel, having made many trips over the past 10 years. He also enjoyed spending time in his pool, being with his family and taking walks. He is survived by his wife, Grace; by 3 children, Kim Russell and her husband, Nicholas, Fort Covington; Shelly King and her husband, George, St. Regis, Quebec; Troy Barnes and his wife, Patricia, Fort Covington; by 6 grandchildren, Shane, Joseph, Tiffany, Cailey, Clair, and Caroline; 1 great granddaughter, Anna; by 3 sisters, Josephine Mitchell, St. Regis, Quebec; Marsha Barnes, Hogansburg; Louise Lazore and her husband Jack, Snye, Quebec; a brother, Darryl Barnes and his wife, Erica, Hogansburg; a godson, Nolan Jacobs, Hogansburg; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Barnes during World War II, and a sister Rita A. Jacobs on January 17, 2002. Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
