The Right Reverend Lord Bishop of Exeter
Valentine Carey was the illegitimate son of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, and an unidentified mother.
He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, and was a fellow of St. John's College.
In 1609, he became a Master of Christ's College, and had served at various ecclesiastical posts between 1603 and 1610.
He was later Dean of St. Paul's and was appointed Bishop of Exeter in 1621, which position he served until his death.
There is a memorial to him at Exeter Cathedral, but he was buried in Old St. Paul's. His tomb no longer exists, and any monument to him that may have existed was subsequently destroyed when the present Cathedral was built.
