Bartolomeo was born in Santa Trinita, Firenze, under the banner of the Gonfaloniere dell'Unicorn; his family pedigree was published by Monsieur L. de MAGNY in his "Nobilaire Universel de France," Paris, 1877 (Vol.12).
Bartolomeo went to England in or before 1532; Principal Merchant to the Court of Henry VIII; raised enormous cash loans among his factors in Antwerp to finance Henry's wars against the King of France (Francois I); sent by Henry to negotiate a peace with the French King, 1545 - Henry's terms were too tough, & the mission failed, but Bartolomeo was granted in reward an augmentation (A rose Gules, seeded Or, barbed Vert) to his Arms (Or, a bend Sable); King's Financial Agent to Edward VI; resided in a large house he had built in Broad Street, parish of St Christopher-le-Stocks, near the old city wall, on the site of an earlier monastic dwelling associated with the fraternity of St Mary in the Chapel of All Hallows, Barking by the Tower; Bartolomeo is mentioned in the Medici Archives as having been the Consul in England for the Florentine Nation.
Bartolomeo was buried 1 May 1561, by the controversialist French Protestant preacher Jean VERON (Henry MACHYN was the undertaker), in Old St Paul's Cathedral, " the nether end of the steps, under the bells"; his will was proved P.C.C. (24 Loftes), 15 Jun 1561.
Bartolomeo married 1stly, Barbara FIAMMINGA (widow of John CAPONIS, another expatriate Florentine Merchant), & 2ndly, Margherita CARNESECCHI, with issue both marriages. His widow Margherita, & their two infant children, Mary & Dino COMPAGNI, returned to live in Firenze.
Bartolomeo also had an illegitimate daughter, Margaret, who marr 1stly, Lazarus ALLEN, & 2ndly, at St Christopher-le-Stocks, 21 Feb 1558, Giovanni Battista CASTIGLIONE, Groom of the Privy Chamber in the Court of Queen Elizabeth.
