Birth: Apr. 14, 1689
Death: Jul. 9, 1746

Scottish Peer. Jacobite. Born the son of Sir John Murray, Duke of Atholl and Lady Catherine Hamilton, he attended St Andrew's College in Fife after which he saw service in the Royal Navy. He was styled Marquess of Tullibardine about 1709 when his elder brother John, Marquess of Tullibardine, was killed at the battle of Malplaquet. During the Jacobite Rising of 1715, he fought for the Stuarts and at the Battle of Glenshiel in June 1719 he was defeated but escaped capture. Despite the fact that a 2000 was offered for his apprehension, he successfully fled into exile. In 1745 he accompanied Prince Charles Edward to Scotland, and landed with him at Borodale in July. After the collapse of the Jacobite cause at Culloden in April 1746, he again escaped but ill health forced him into surrender. He was sent to London where he was committed to the Tower. He died less than three months later from an apparent bladder infection.
