Birth: 1813
Death: 1857

British sculptor and inventor. He was the inventor of the collodion process in photography which superseded the daguerreotype and calotype processes and was in general use for some 30 years. Born in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, the son of a butcher, he travelled to London to take up an apprenticeship as a silversmith before becoming a sculptor. As a sculptor, he found photography useful as a way of capturing images of his subjects, but was dissatisfied with the poor definition and contast of the calotype and long exposures needed. This influenced him to invent the new process in 1848, which greatly increased the accessibility of photography for the general public. The Royal Photographic Society has a collection of his photographs.
