John was the son of Lot West Ackley and Elizabeth Taylor Ackley.
From the Pulaski Democrat, 6 July 1882, page 3, image 3:
Died--after a severe illness of four weeks, J. S. Ackley, aged 55 years. He was a kind husband and indulgent father and was respected by all who knew him. The funeral services took place at his residence on Thursday, June 29, at three o'clock p.m. He was a member of [American Legion] Post E.S. Bentley and was buried under the auspices of that order. Ackley was born in the Town of Albion, Oswego County, NY and was highly respected by all who knew him. Soon after the late war broke out in 1861, he responded to his country's call and enlisted in the 2d NY Vol Art'y, Oct 27th, 1861, and was discharged from the service, April 7th, 1863 on account of physical disability. He has been in terrible health since.
