John J. Allen

Calcium John J. Allen, 79, Calcium, passed away Wednesday evening, November 23rd, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility where he had resided for two years.

Mr. Allen is a retired Deputy Fire Chief with the City of Watertown Fire Department.

He was born in Watertown, August 21, 1932, a son of John and Ruby Rivers Carpenter Allen. He graduated from Watertown High School. John served with the US Air Force from 1950 - 1954, during the Korean War. He joined the City of Watertown Fire Department on Nov. 1, 1956, following his honorable discharge from the Air Force. Mr. Allen was appointed a captain in the Watertown Fire Department on July 20, 1969. During his time with the department, Chief Allen served as a training officer, arson investigator, and Battalion Chief and training officer, instrumental in implementing the program to comply with a state law requiring in-service training for the fire department members. He retired from the fire department on Aug. 24, 1987, after 31 years of service.

Mr. Allen was a former member of the Philadelphia American Legion, the Watertown Eagles, and the North Pole Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and gardening.Chief Allen also served as president of the Calcium Fire Co. Inc.

John married Muriel E. Bisig on April 14, 1961 in Rodman. Mrs. Allen died September 20, 2008.

John is survived by a son John, Watertown. A daughter Lisa Fulmer, Texas. 5 grandchildren. A sister Celine Tillman of Theresa and a brother Andrew, Camillus. Several nieces and nephews. A sister in law, Regina (Robert) Overton. A brother James, predeceased him.

The funeral will be 1 pm Monday, November 28th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Beverly Bibbins officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Rodman. A calling hour will be Monday from 12 noon to 1 pm prior to the service. Contributions may be made to the North Pole Volunteer Fire Department.
