FRANCIS W. ACKER SELF-EMPLOYED BARBER
Francis W. Acker, 78, of 12045 Route 11, died Monday evening at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Syracuse, after a short illness.
Mr. Acker was a self-employed barber and, for many years, worked on East Church Street, Adams. He later had his own shop on Main and North Park streets, both in Adams, and later at his Route 11 home.
He was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Church, Adams, a fourth-degree member and treasurer of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Don Rounds Post 586, American Legion, Adams.
Born Dec. 2, 1918, in Harrisville, son of William and Verna Archer Acker, he graduated from Copenhagen High School. He enlisted in the Army, serving in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.
He married Rena Prouty of Adams on Nov. 22, 1943. The couple lived in Adams. She died July 16, 1970.
He married Edna Grieco of Adams Center on Jan. 2, 1971, in St. Cecilia's Church. They lived at 12045 Route 11. She died Jan. 28, 1993.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Acker, Aurora, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Regina Crumb, Adams; three brothers, Merrill Acker, Three Mile Bay, Keith Acker, Rochester, and Earl Burnham, Baldwinsville; four sisters, Aletha Waldron, Lowville, Muriel LaRose, Ogdensburg, Jean Howcroft, Macedon, and Rosemary Diefendorf, Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, a great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia's Church with the Rev. Douglas Decker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Rodman.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, where a vigil service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m.
