About 1853 or 1854, Richard married a lady named Carrie from Vermont, and they had three children. Richard and his wife outlived all their children.
On 21 Aug 1862 Richard mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Millbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 30 years and 1 month old. On 31 Dec 1862 Richard ended military service by discharge due to disability.
On 9 Jan 1914, Richard was admitted at National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Bath, New York. He died there on 22 Jan 1914. He was 81 years and 6 months old.
