George Low Babson Jr., 84, a resident of St. Simons Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005.
"Joe" served in the 3rd Army as a tech Sergeant in the Ordinance Corps during World War II in the ETO. Before the war, he was part of the class of '42 at Cornell University, where he lettered in hockey, lacrosse and baseball and was a brother in the Sigma Chi fraternity. He became president of Babson Brothers Company in Chicago. Later, he went on to become the vice president for the Metropolitan Bank of New York and was involved in the real estate and investment business. He was an honorary member of the Onondaga Golf and Country Club in Fayetteville, New York, past president of "Syracuse Golf Bandits" and a member of Sea Palms Golf and Tennis Resort on St. Simons Island, where he retired with his wife, Lee, in 1981.

Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lee Babson Smith; his children, Patricia Babson White, George L. Babson III and his wife, Karen Freeman Babson, Barbara Babson Doshna and her husband, Walter John Doshna, and Geoffrey A.S. Babson; his grandchildren, Alexis W. Miller, Christopher John Doshna, Nicholas Babson Doshna and Robert James Doshna; and a great-grandchild, Alan Patrick Miller.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church on St. Simons Island. There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service at DeWitt Community Church will be announced at a later date.
