Donald Lyle Allen was born in Mercer, PA on Feb 1, 1924, the son of Oscar M. and Vera (Crawford) Allen. He enlisted in the US Navy on February 19, 1943.
Donald received his basic training at the US Naval Training Center, Sampson, NY, and advanced training at Little Creek, VA and Brooklyn, NY. While assigned to the merchant ships the SS Moses Brown and the SS Malvern Hill, Seaman 1st Class Allen performed gunnery duty. He later served on the USS Chicago and an aircraft gunner.
(USS Chicago (CA-136), a heavy cruiser, was launched in August 1944. She joined the Third Fleet in July and supported carrier air strikes. She also furnished shore bombardment. In the final attack against the Japanese home island until the cease-fire of August 15, 1944. The Chicago received one battle star for WW II service.
