Mrs. Ellen T. Agnew, 85, Holiday Drive, Green Acres, Kingston, died on Friday, August 15, 2008 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
Ellen was born in Forty Fort on March 27, 1923, and was a daughter of the late Agnes Mae Wallace and William J. Tretheway. She graduated from Forty Fort High School and Wyoming Seminary School of Business.
Ellen had been employed at Pomeroys, Midway Shopping Center, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She retired in 1988 from the Department of Health, Human Services and Social Services, where she was in the administration office of computer operations for 18 years.
She resided in Kingston for the past two years. Previously she had resided in Forty Fort for her entire life. She was a member of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church, its Amicitia class and Sunday School Teacher for 27 years. Also she was a member of the United Methodist Women, Kingston Senior Citizens, Big Band Society and volunteered at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Agnew, 1976; brother, Wallace Tretheway; and sister, Jennie Carver.
Surviving are her daughter, Judy Verespy and her husband, Jack, Manassas, Va.; son, James Agnew Jr., and his wife, Colleen, State College, Pa.; sister, Peg Hughes, Wilkes-Barre; six granddaughters; and 6 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc., Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, with her pastor, the Rev. Donald A. Roberts SR., officiating. The interment will be in Hollenback Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions, if desired, can be made to Forty Fort United Methodist Church, Wyoming & Yeager Avenues, Forty Fort, 18704.
