Ruth Shippen Alter, 93, who served as president of several local civic clubs, died Friday in her Hyde Park home.
Alter, a native of Louisville, KY, was the widow of the late Lucien W. Scott Alter, former president of the American Tool Works.
She was a past president of the Cincinnati Woman's Club, The Widows and Old Men's Club, the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Ohio, the Indian Hill Garden Club and the Garden Club of Cincinnati. She was an active benefactor of the Cincinnati Art Museum and the University of Cincinnati, where she set up the L. W. Scott and Ruth Alter Eminent Scholar Chair in advanced manufacturing systems.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jarvis B. Hadley of Chevy Chase, MD and Mrs. Eugene Klenner of Cincinnati; and six nieces and nephews. Services were at 11 a.m. at the Indian Hill Church.
