Birth: Jun. 22, 1899
Death: Oct. 16, 1965

Soviet film director, specializing in the field of documentary and biopic. Winner of the Stalin Prize, second degree (1948). Honored Artist of the Latvian SSR (1949). He studied at the State College director of cinematography in the studio of Sergei Eisenstein (1928-1929). Upon completion of college he worked at the film studio newsreel editor "Kulturfilm." Since 1931 - director CSDF (1932-1935 - director Cinetrain Soyuzkinohroniki). He taught at the operator faculty VGIK (1933-1936). Directed the film magazine "Soviet art." Documentaries: "Vladimir Majakovsky" (1940, 1955), "Maxim Gorky" (1941, 1958), "The" Lion Tag" (1953), "N.K.Krupskaja" (1959)," Viva Cuba!" (1960). The state premium of the USSR (1948).
