Marquis de Condorcet
Original name: Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicola de Caritat
Birth: Sep. 17, 1743
Death: Mar. 28, 1794

Scientist. Known as the Marquis de Condorcet, he was an acclaimed mathematician, Encyclopaedist, Jacobin, and anti-slavery proponent. He opposed the execution of Louis XVI. A warrant was issued for his arrest in 1793 and he went into hiding, only to be captured in 1794. He died in jail the day after his imprisonment. Entered Pantheon in 1989. (bio by: David Conway)
