Olive Nelle Cothern Alexander

Jackson

After many years of abundant life on this earth, Olive Nelle Alexander went home to be with her Lord on November 6, 2013, forty-four years to the day after her husband died. She was a homemaker, teacher, and writer, but most of all, a devout Christian. She lived her life on the highest plane to the glory of God through Jesus Christ and everything she did had the touch of excellence. She was a Sunday School teacher for 70 years and a very talented pianist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommie Burns Alexander; her parents, Willie Monroe and Etta Howell Cothern; three sisters, O'Dera Lawrence, Grace Cothern and Pearl Alford; two nephews, Larry Hal Rayborn and Barney Joe Rayborn; brothers-in-law, Corbett Lawrence, Percy Rayborn, Willard J. Alford and Wilton O'Quin. She is survived by her son, Jimmy Derald Alexander (Carolyn); sister, Willene R. O'Quin; grandchildren, Jennifer Wright Lawler (Parrish) and Charles Wright (Natalie); three great grandchildren; niece, Gaye Frances Smith ( Farris); nephew, Terry Keith Lawrence, Sr. (Schranga); nephew, Howard Alexander (Gertie); eight great-nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives. Nelle was born on April 1, 1918, in Pike County, MS, graduated from Carter's Creek High School and attended William Carey University. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson, and attended faithfully until illness prevented it. She was a member of the Esther Sunday School Class and Kathy McNair WMU group. She loved her church, its pastors and staff. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church at 11:00 o'clock a.m. on November 11, 2013, officiated by Dr. Stan Buckey and assisted by Dr. Farris Smith. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service in the sanctuary. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Pallbearers will be Mr. Ron Aldridge, Mr. Bobby Barefield, Dr. Bill Boteler, Mr. Frank Buchanan, Dr. Sean Cross, Mr. Chris Lamb, Dr. Michael Smith, Mr. Ralph Sowell and Dr. John Winscott. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 250, Jackson, MS 39205. The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Richard Russell and the staff of Hospice Ministries for their compassionate care. A very special word of thanks goes to dear friends, Mrs. Tricia Strong and Ms. Mary Herzog. Their assistance in the care of Nelle in her final days was truly a gift of love. They will never know how much they were appreciated because words are inadequate.
