Miss Theresia Abshagen final rites set Saturday
BHS teacher 37 years
Miss Theresia Abshagen, member of the Brookhaven High School faculty for 37 years and one of the school's most beloved teachers, died early today in King's Daughters Hospital. Miss Abshagen suffered a massive heart attack the night of Sept. 28 in Tallahassee, Fla. And had been hospitalized since that time. Miss Abshagen and several Brookhaven women had joined a tour group in Jackson the morning of Sept. 28 for a trip to Florida.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from Faith Presbyterian Church with burial in Rosehill Cemetery. The Rev. Shelton Sanford will conduct the rites. Visitation hours at Brookhaven Funeral Home will be observed Thursday afternoon and Friday.
Miss Abshagen, born in 1910, was the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Stella West Abshagen.
"Miss Ab", as the native Brookhavenite was affectionately known to her students, was a 1929 graduate of Brookhaven High School, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Whitworth College and Millsaps College, and received her Master's degree in English from the University of Wisconsin. She began her teaching career in the Mississippi Delta, remaining there four years, and joined the Brookhaven Public School System in 1937 as a teacher of English at Brookhaven High School. "Miss Ab" once said her most enjoyable years were those when she taught Senior English and Speech and the extra curricula activities she participated in such as graduation exercises, Awards Day programs, Homecoming festivities, Senior plays, sponsoring the school annual, and other events. She played an important role in the Homecoming activities for 31 years, retiring as an educator in 1974.
Miss Abshagen was the recipient of the Urban Foundation's Outstanding Teacher Award in 1973 and was honored by the Brookhaven Exchange Club with presentation of its Golden Deeds Award in 1958 for outstanding contributions to her community.
During the 1979 Homecoming auditorium program at BHS, Clifford Wand, president of the 1949 Class, made a surprise announcement of the establishment of a scholarship in honor of Miss Abshagen, the first scholarship presented to a designated senior of the school in 1980. The audience's resounding applause and standing ovation following the announcement indicated that many, man Brookhaven and Lincoln County citizens shared in the love and appreciation of "Miss Ab", as a teacher and citizen, to Brookhaven and her fellowmen.
Miss Abshagen is survived by her first cousin, Mrs. Sarah Abshagen Broome of California and other cousins.
Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Session of Faith Presbyterian Church.
