Alex and Mary Varnado were married 26 October 1899 in Pike County, Mississippi.
In 1912 my great grandmother, Jennie Stokes Bergold, was raking and burning leaves in her yard. Her dress caught on fire, engulfing her in flames. Her neighbor, Mr. Applewhite heard her screams and ran to her aid. There was a fence surrounding the yard and the gate was locked. He climbed the fence and managed to put the flames out. She was taken a short distance to the train depot and transported on the next train to a hospital in New Orleans, where she died. Even thought it has been nearly 100 years since this incident, I am deeply grateful to Mr. Alex for the effort he made to save Grandma Bergold.
