Dr. Andrew Wesley Baird, 79, died Monday, April 13, 2009 at Oktibbeha County Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Starkville, Mississippi with burial at Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 15, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home. A native of Houston, MS, Dr. Baird graduated from Houston High School in 1948. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Japan and Korea during 1952 and 1953 with the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was a member of Post 05573, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Starkville, MS. Dr. Baird received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Mississippi State University, and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. He joined the Mississippi State University staff in February, 1957 as a research sociologist. He retired in January, 1992 as Professor of Sociology, Department of Sociology, and as Research Sociologist in the Social Science Research Center, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. Upon his retirement he was named Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Sociologist. He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church of Starkville. He loved his church, his family and his many friends. He will be missed so much by us all. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivy Walker Baird and Estelle McKinney Baird of Houston, MS. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine Foster Baird; sons, Dennis Wesley and wife Janet Baird of Kosciusko, MS, and Keith Walker Baird of Starkville, MS; two grandsons, Wes and wife Bridget Baird of Houston, MS and Drew Baird of Kosciusko, MS; and one great granddaughter, Ella Grace Baird of Houston, MS. He is also survived by his sister, Sue and husband Frank Pemper of Houston, MS and his brother, Tom and wife Mary Jo Baird of Houston, MS. Pallbearers will be Wes Baird, Drew Baird, Larry Doolittle, Mike Lightsey, Frank Pemper and Bruce Wofford. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Baird, Louis Bluhm, Murray Lindsey and Jack Noe. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Starkville or a charity of your choice.
