He was born in 1924, in Jacksonville, the son of Wallace and Dorothy (Black) Hembrough. He married Dorothy Martin on Jan. 23, 1947, in Jacksonville.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Woodside (husband, Mike) of Scandia, Minn., and Susan Hathaway (husband, Randy) of Summerfield, Fla.; two grandchildren, Emma and Nathan Woodside of Scandia, Minn.; sister, Betty Lou Hembrough of Champaign; sister-in-law, Evelyn Martin of Colorado; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Dr. Hembrough and his wife, Dorothy, a Registered Nurse, built the Hembrough Animal Hospital of Jacksonville during the 1950s. They greatly enjoyed their years working side-by-side to treat large and small animals together. After 10 years in large and small animal practice, Dr. Hembrough decided to pursue further graduate education. He returned to the University of Illinois and obtained his Master of Science in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Veterinary Medical Science in 1966.

Following his 1966 graduation, Dr. Hembrough took a teaching position in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa. He had a true passion for education and in return was admired and respected by his graduate students. His research was in the area of Veterinary Physiology with particular interest in the study of the heart. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1998.
