Ralph Francis Hembrough, 80, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at the home of his daughter, Rebecca. He was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Jacksonville, the son of Ellsworth D. and Caroline Megginson Hembrough. Following his father's death, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Caroline and Orlia Thomas.

He is survived by one son, Dywayne (wife, Deborah) French, of North Augusta, S.C.; two daughters, Mary Helen (husband, Jerry) Dixon and Rebecca Sue (husband, Lenny) Whited, both of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, Jerry Alan (wife, Michelle) French of San Diego, Calif., Amber (husband, Randy) Johnstone of Springfield, Kelly Jo Dixon and Alyssa Noel Dixon, both of Jacksonville, Nicole Sue Layne and Benjamin James Layne, both of Springfield, and Jared Michael Layne of Jacksonville; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Muriel Points of Jacksonville and Donna (husband, Howard) Gutekunst of South Jacksonville; and one brother, Harlan O. (wife, Dorothy) Thomas of Petersburg. He was preceded in death by one son in infancy; one grandson, Michael Dwayne French; two sisters, Virginia Schramm and Helen B. Kopplin; and eight brothers, Bobby Joe Thomas, Kenneth E. Hembrough, John Dale Hembrough, Howard L. Hembrough, Gerald L. Hembrough, Ray E. Hembrough, F. Wayne Hembrough, and one brother in infancy.

Mr. Hembrough retired from CILCO Light & Power Duck Creek Station in February of 1989. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean War. During World War II he was stationed at Pearl Harbor and earned a Bronze Star during the fighting at Iwo Jima. He served on the USS Boston. He was a world traveler and participated in all of the ship reunions. At the age of 50, Mr. Hembrough attended Spoon River College, studying horticulture. He was a nature lover, animal lover, avid reader and a bingo enthusiast. He was a member of the National Geographic Society, Audubon Society, NRA, American Legion, Amvets, and a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #1379.

Services were entrusted to Cody and Son Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
