Birth: Apr. 27, 1921
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
Death: Feb., 2012, USA

SHELBURNE - Philip Anthony Abrami was born April 27, 1921, in Manhattan, N.Y. He was one of three children of Italian immigrants, Bruno and Grace Abrami.

He grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in tough times. At the age of five, he received his first tool set and quickly developed a lifelong passion for how things work. He volunteered for the United States Navy in World War II and served his country proudly as a bombardier from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he worked as a machinist for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In 1945, he met the love of his life, Vera Anzalone, at a neighborhood block party. It was love at first sight. They were married in 1947. The marriage flourished. They raised two sons together, Philip Jr. and Anthony, always providing their sons unconditional love and support. Under the GI Bill, Phil returned to school, completed his high school degree and bachelor's and master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering with Honors from Polytechnic University of New York. He worked briefly at RCA, but had the extraordinary honor to be invited back by the University to join the Mechanical Engineering Department as a professor, a position he held for almost 40 years until his retirement. Along the way, he also worked as a consultant to outside companies. Most notably, he refined the "Iron Byron" mechanical golfing machine and established equipment standards for the United States Golfing Association in the 1980's. In retirement, Phil and Vera traveled extensively and most of all, enjoyed time with the family. Phil developed very strong bonds with his daughters-inlaw, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, spending every Christmas and month-long summer vacations at the family beach house in Cape May, N.J. Five years ago, they relocated to Shelburne Bay Retirement Community to be closer to their two sons and family members and formed many wonderful, new friendships.

Philip is survived by his sister, Marie; his sons, Philip Jr. and Anthony; their wives, Valerie and Rosemarie; five grandchildren, Alex and wife, Holly, Melissa, Gregory and fiancee, Emily, Jessica and husband, Rich, and Allison; and one great- grandchild Anthony, who loved to call him "Great Poppy". He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Vera Abrami; and by a brother, Frank Abrami.

Phil will be remembered for his devotion to God, family, and country. He lived his life to the highest standards, and was always a man of principle, personal responsibility, and independence. May God bless his beautiful soul and welcome him with loving arms as he joins the love of his life, Vera, in heaven.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 2, 2012, at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church in Shelburne. Immediately following there will be a memorial service and gathering at Shelburne Bay Senior Living. Committal services will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012, at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph Center. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.
