MATHISTON - A single-vehicle crash near Mathiston killed a 5-year-old boy Monday morning.
The accident occurred around 8:40 a.m. about 1.5 miles north of Mathiston on state Highway 403, just south of Shine Jewel Road. The driver of the 1992 Mazda Protege DX, Keely Elizabeth Avent, 22, of the Clarkson community was southbound, Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Brian Mobley said.
The car veered off the west side of the road and overturned, he said. Avent's son, who Mobley said was a passenger in the back seat, was unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle.
Her son, whom Webster County Coroner Steve Wells identified as Caleb Avent, 5, was pronounced dead on the scene from his injuries.
Keely Avent was wearing her seatbelt and was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora, where she was treated and released. The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Mathiston Fire Department volunteers also responded to the accident in addition to NMMC medics and the MHP.
Brian Hoffman of 1142 Highway 403, who lives just north of the accident scene, said he heard the crash and went outside to investigate. He said Keely Avent had gotten out of the car but that it was on top of Caleb.
After calling 911, Hoffman said he lifted the front side of the car and, with Keely Avent's help, was able to get Caleb out from underneath it.
Oliver Funeral Home was handling arrangements for Caleb.
