J. R. Alexander, 83, died Saturday, April 04, 2009, at Hendrick Medical Center after a short illness.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, in Old Glory Cemetery (Stonewall County), directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
J. R. was born August 31, 1925 to Richard Dee and Nancy Callie Alexander in Knox City, Texas. He grew up around Knox City. J. R. joined the United States Army in 1943, shipping out to Europe where he spent 11 1/2 months. On October 10, 1944, two days after he returned to Rule, Texas, J. R. married Lou Vica Strickland. They moved to Abilene in 1950 where he became a truck driver for the next 58 years. He was working for C & W Leasing at the time of his death. J. R. was a lifetime member and past president of the Old Timers Association (Texas Cowboy Reunion of Stamford, Texas).
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 55 years, Lou Vica Alexander (February 23, 2004); a son, Jay Alexander; and a brother, Clifton Alexander.
Survivors include three children, Mike Alexander and wife Gale, Dane Alexander, and Vicki Craig and husband John, all of Abilene; twelve grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Billie Alexander and Charlotte Dotson, both of Abilene; and numerous extended family members.
Memorials may be made to the Old Timers Association in Stamford, Texas.
