Birth: Nov. 11, 1835, Germany
Death: May 11, 1912
Custer County
Colorado, USA

May 17, 1912: Another Colonist Passes. John Knuth, an old-time and highly respected citizen of the valley, died at his home there on Tuesday evening last at about 10 o'clock after an illness of only a few hours, aged 79 years. Deceased was a native of West Prussia, Germany, and came to America and settled in this valley where he resided continuously ever since. He was a prosperous farmer and known as a hard worker up to two years ago when he sold his ranch holdings and retired. His word was as good as a bond and his honesty and integrity unquestioned. He was a devoted husband and fond parent, being the father of a large family of girls, all married. He was a Christian of the Lutheran faith, and was one of the founders of the valley Lutheran church. Surviving are the widow and five daughters--Mrs. Gottlieb O'Graske, Mrs. H. A. Lohstroh, Mrs. Richard Kastendieck, Mrs. Wm. Schellerberg, and Mrs. Dora Lange--to whom are borne the sympathies of many acquaintances in their hour of deep sorrow. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock Saturday (tomorrow) at the Lutheran church in the valley, the Rev. Carl Lange officiating, and the burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery.

***"Hope Lutheran Church: A Century of Grace", page 5: While we have no complete record of these beginnings, the following seem to be the names of the family heads who united to form the first congregation a hundred years ago: Capt. Carl Wulsten, Johann Knuth, Wilhelm Ackelbein, August Menzel, Gottleib Ograske Sr., Karsten Kuhnrath, Fritz Kuehn, Fritz Jeske, Heinrich Kettler, August Klose, Wilhelm Henjes, Gerhart Hartbauer, Heinrich Goschen, and Fritz Vahldick.
