MONTROSE -- Montrose resident, Jesus Acevedo, age 89, died Friday morning, April 27, 2007, at the Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose.Jesus Acevedo, the son of Monserrate Acevedo and Sebastiana Vargas, was born on July 10, 1917, in Aguada, Puerto Rico. He spent his childhood in Aguada and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, working on the family plantation.
As a young man, he moved to San Juan and worked for a pharmaceutical company, traveling throughout Puerto Rico. While in San Juan, he met Florinda "Florita" Rodriguez. He fell head over heels and after serving in the United States Army, Caribbean Theater of Operations with the 20th Transportation Corps during World War II, he followed her to New York City, where they were united in marriage in 1947.
Jesus worked as a cook in various restaurants in New York City throughout his life. His favorites were the nightclub, The Latin Quarter, and Tardi's, where he increased his Italian language skills. After retirement, he and Florita moved to Jacksonville, Fla. His retirement did not last long, when he took a job as head chef with the Deerwood Country Club.
Aside from his love of family and friends, Jesus enjoyed playing dominoes, 500 rummy and watching baseball (the Mets while in New York and the Braves when in Florida). His religion became a major part of his life after he lost his beloved Florita in 1991. He became an active member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church after moving to Deltona, Fla. He became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church after moving to Montrose in 1998.
We really lost Jesus years ago to Alzheimer's, but we will all remember how he made us laugh with his jokes and stories of his escapades as a young man. He made friends wherever he went and he will be greatly missed by all who had the chance to know him.
Surviving family members include two daughters: Priscilla (Greg) Fishering, of Montrose, Colo.; Lisa (Bill) Kovatch, of Ocala, Fla.; four grandsons: Billy and Ricky Kovatch, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Gery (Jane) Kovatch, of Delaware, Ohio; David Fishering, of San Antonio, Texas; one granddaughter, Michelle Fishering, of Montrose, Colo.; two great-grandchildren: Rebecca and Jason Kovatch, of Delaware, Ohio; one brother, Reuben Acevedo, of Aguada, Puerto Rico; his nephew, Juan (Elaine) Rodriguez, of Penrose, Colo., who was like a son to him; and as well as other nephews and nieces.
Jesus was preceded in death by his wife, Florita; three brothers: Daniel, Andres and Benjamin; and three sisters: Barbara, Candace and Ventura.
A graveside service was officiated by Father Mike Walker, from St. Mary's Catholic Church, on Monday, April 30, in the Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.
