Lee Clark Hanstedt died of leukemia on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in Durango. He was 65.

Mr. Hanstedt was born June 29, 1944, in Shawano, Wis., the son of Milo and Verna Hanstedt. He grew up in Tolleson, Ariz., where he graduated from high school in 1962. He worked for Rainbo Bread for a short time until he decided to purchase and operate a gas station.

In 1971, he moved his family to Durango, where his parents had purchased a farm in 1965. Here he built a farm and his salvage yard, H and H Salvage on County Road 222, southeast of Elmore's Corner.

"He was just a real nice guy," said his brother Michael Hanstedt. "He was always helping someone. That was his forte."

Mr. Hanstedt enjoyed fishing and hunting. And he spent hours outside searching for unusual rocks and gold.

He was preceded in death by his son James "Mace" Hanstedt. and sisters, Kaye Cardell and Sherri Hanstedt.

He is survived by daughter, Leah Hanstedt, of Durango; step-daughter Christy Hews of Durango; sons Shawn Hanstedt of Phoenix and Devon Hanstedt of Durango; brothers Michael Hanstedt of Durango and Barry Hanstedt of San Carlos, Mexico; sister Karen Durham of Breen; ex-wife Cricket Hanstedt of Phoenix; longtime companion Irene Hews of Escondido, Calif.; girlfriend Cristina Sollsteimer of Durango; several grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Hood Mortuary. on Friday from 12 p.m. noon to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Monte Guswell officiating. Burial will occur at Bondad Cemetery in Durango.

Lee, It was a pleasure going to school with you. A pleasure I should say a blast. We were a great bunch the Class of "62". We never had a dull moment that was sure with people like you, David Poppie & Jim Sommers. You will be greatly missed.
