Sonja Barnaart, 87, of Amarillo, formerly of Dumas, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Morrison Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Conway, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Amarillo, officiating. Private burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
Sonja Barnaart was born Aug. 3, 1920, to Herman and Charlotte Dekker, in Sibolga, Indonesia. On Dec. 12, 1947, she married Joseph "Joe" Barnaart in Holland and he preceded her in death in 1980. She was a licensed vocational nurse and worked at Memorial Hospital more than 20 years before retiring. She was self-taught and enjoyed many crafts, crochet, needlepoint and jewelry making. Sonja was an excellent seamstress, making her own patterns and tailoring clothes for her family.
In 1964, she became a proud United States citizen, but never forgot her heritage. She had a very strong passion for life. She had lived in Dumas and Moore County since 1957 before moving to Amarillo in 1991. Sonja was a member of the Amarillo Senior Writers Club and the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to thank Heritage Convalescent Center for their compassion and care of Sonja.
She was preceded in death by her son, Gilbert Barnaart.
Survivors include a daughter, Vikkie of Austin; a brother, William Dekker of Holland; a sister, Netty Van-Duinen of Holland; her beloved adopted family; and a niece and a nephew.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
