Dorothy James-Akers, age 99 of White Hall, went to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 7, 2018 at White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born at home in Greene County, south of Glasgow, on January 27, 1919. She was one of six daughters, and since there were no sons, at an early age she learned to drive a team of horses behind a plow.

Dorothy walked to Lovelace School from her home and then rode by horseback to Patterson when it still boasted Grade School through High School. After graduation, she worked as a waitress at Griswold’s Café in White Hall, and then as a clerk at Ridings Dry Goods Store, also in White Hall.

She married WWII veteran Carl S. Akers on April 24, 1946 and they made their home in Roodhouse for two years. They joined the Roodhouse First Baptist Church where she was a Deaconess for years, and where she is still a member. Dorothy was a homemaker, and then a mother when on March 1, 1947 she gave birth to their son, Stephen Kent. In 1948, Dorothy and Carl moved to a farm near Patterson, and on June 9, 1952 their daughter Deanna Linn was born.

Dorothy loved gardening (both vegetables and flowers), cooking, sewing, and listening to old time, and gospel music. Finding new dessert recipes was a passion of hers. Carl left her a widow way too soon when he passed away May 25, 1981, but she stayed on at the family farm until 2012 when health issues made it necessary to move to White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she was lovingly cared for. Everyone will miss her and remember her with love.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl S. Akers; her parents, Roy Carmel James and Ida Christina Gauges-James; her five sisters, Amelia Schutz, Eloise Hanback, Viola Prindle, Imogene Hiatt, and Carmelene Pinkerton

Dorothy is survived by her son, Stephen Akers of White Hall; and her daughter and son-in-law, Deanna and Lyndell Dyer of Carmi.

A funeral service will be held at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. The burial service will be held at Williams – Edwards Cemetery west of Barrow. Memorials are suggested to Williams-Edwards Cemetery.
